Almost 3 weeks.<\/p><p id=\"7b57\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph me mf fv mg b mh mi mj mk ml mm mn mo mp mq mr ms mt mu mv mw mx my mz na nb fo bj\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">My goal was to start writing consistently. At least once, but preferably multiple times, per week.<\/p><p id=\"e380\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph me mf fv mg b mh mi mj mk ml mm mn mo mp mq mr ms mt mu mv mw mx my mz na nb fo bj\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">I did great at first.<\/p><p id=\"f5a6\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph me mf fv mg b mh mi mj mk ml mm mn mo mp mq mr ms mt mu mv mw mx my mz na nb fo bj\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Back in December I wrote and posted 4 articles in as many days.<\/p><p id=\"8d65\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph me mf fv mg b mh mi mj mk ml mm mn mo mp mq mr ms mt mu mv mw mx my mz na nb fo bj\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">And then\u2026<\/p><p id=\"d891\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph me mf fv mg b mh mi mj mk ml mm mn mo mp mq mr ms mt mu mv mw mx my mz na nb fo bj\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">February came before pen hit paper again, metaphorically speaking.<\/p><p id=\"cf7b\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph me mf fv mg b mh mi mj mk ml mm mn mo mp mq mr ms mt mu mv mw mx my mz na nb fo bj\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">And not just February, but later February. Like the 21st.<\/p><p id=\"df23\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph me mf fv mg b mh mi mj mk ml mm mn mo mp mq mr ms mt mu mv mw mx my mz na nb fo bj\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">But then I published 10 articles in 8 days.<\/p><p id=\"8b84\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph me mf fv mg b mh mi mj mk ml mm mn mo mp mq mr ms mt mu mv mw mx my mz na nb fo bj\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">And then\u2026<\/p><p id=\"946c\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph me mf fv mg b mh mi mj mk ml mm mn mo mp mq mr ms mt mu mv mw mx my mz na nb fo bj\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">It\u2019s now.<\/p><p id=\"43dc\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph me mf fv mg b mh mi mj mk ml mm mn mo mp mq mr ms mt mu mv mw mx my mz na nb fo bj\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">March 20th.<\/p><p id=\"4b5a\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph me mf fv mg b mh mi mj mk ml mm mn mo mp mq mr ms mt mu mv mw mx my mz na nb fo bj\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">I do this. It\u2019s a pattern. I go in spurts.<\/p><p id=\"e8fc\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph me mf fv mg b mh mi mj mk ml mm mn mo mp mq mr ms mt mu mv mw mx my mz na nb fo bj\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">I get really excited about something and push myself hard to make a vision come to life.<\/p><p id=\"7ca6\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph me mf fv mg b mh mi mj mk ml mm mn mo mp mq mr ms mt mu mv mw mx my mz na nb fo bj\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Too hard, probably.<\/p><p id=\"09aa\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph me mf fv mg b mh mi mj mk ml mm mn mo mp mq mr ms mt mu mv mw mx my mz na nb fo bj\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">And I burn out.<\/p><p id=\"78e1\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph me mf fv mg b mh mi mj mk ml mm mn mo mp mq mr ms mt mu mv mw mx my mz na nb fo bj\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">And have to rest.<\/p><p id=\"bdfb\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph me mf fv mg b mh mi mj mk ml mm mn mo mp mq mr ms mt mu mv mw mx my mz na nb fo bj\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Although I don\u2019t know if I would say that I pushed myself too hard with this one. I mean, yes 10 articles in 8 days is a fair few. But it wasn\u2019t super taxing.<\/p><p id=\"10a2\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph me mf fv mg b mh mi mj mk ml mm mn mo mp mq mr ms mt mu mv mw mx my mz na nb fo bj\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">The writing wasn\u2019t.<\/p><p id=\"248f\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph me mf fv mg b mh mi mj mk ml mm mn mo mp mq mr ms mt mu mv mw mx my mz na nb fo bj\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">It was other stuff.<\/p><p id=\"fdcf\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph me mf fv mg b mh mi mj mk ml mm mn mo mp mq mr ms mt mu mv mw mx my mz na nb fo bj\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">I guess it was money.<\/p><p id=\"f667\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph me mf fv mg b mh mi mj mk ml mm mn mo mp mq mr ms mt mu mv mw mx my mz na nb fo bj\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Try as I might to remove money from the equation and just focus on writing, I have found it to be a challenge. I have found myself worrying too much. And spinning my wheels, as it were, to make my writing able to produce an income for me.<\/p><p id=\"20a7\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph me mf fv mg b mh mi mj mk ml mm mn mo mp mq mr ms mt mu mv mw mx my mz na nb fo bj\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">And I don\u2019t like that.<\/p><p id=\"2174\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph me mf fv mg b mh mi mj mk ml mm mn mo mp mq mr ms mt mu mv mw mx my mz na nb fo bj\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">I want my writing to be about the art of it. About the craft. I want it to be driven by the expression of beautiful things instead of making money.<\/p><p id=\"263f\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph me mf fv mg b mh mi mj mk ml mm mn mo mp mq mr ms mt mu mv mw mx my mz na nb fo bj\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">But in some ways I think that is the problem.<\/p><p id=\"4aea\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph me mf fv mg b mh mi mj mk ml mm mn mo mp mq mr ms mt mu mv mw mx my mz na nb fo bj\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">That mindset about money.<\/p><p id=\"0fc4\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph me mf fv mg b mh mi mj mk ml mm mn mo mp mq mr ms mt mu mv mw mx my mz na nb fo bj\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">I think that there are a lot of broken perspectives around money. And it\u2019s led to a lot of turmoil and heartache.<\/p><p id=\"5475\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph me mf fv mg b mh mi mj mk ml mm mn mo mp mq mr ms mt mu mv mw mx my mz na nb fo bj\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">I\u2019ve had the privilege of editing a lot of videos for Garrett Gunderson, who I consider to be one of the brightest minds in the money and finance space. His newest book\u00a0<a class=\"af md\" href=\"https:\/\/a.co\/d\/aXnDIzc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener ugc nofollow\"><em class=\"nc\">Money Unmasked<\/em><\/a>\u00a0I think is really a game-changer for money perspectives. Btw I don\u2019t get any kind of commission if you buy the book, I just really think it\u2019s great.<\/p><p id=\"ef24\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph me mf fv mg b mh mi mj mk ml mm mn mo mp mq mr ms mt mu mv mw mx my mz na nb fo bj\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">In\u00a0<em class=\"nc\">Money Unmasked<\/em>\u00a0Garrett addresses our money personas and how they effect our relationships with money.<\/p><p id=\"c2f6\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph me mf fv mg b mh mi mj mk ml mm mn mo mp mq mr ms mt mu mv mw mx my mz na nb fo bj\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">I know that I\u2019ve had a pretty rough relationship with money throughout my life. I\u2019ve lived in scarcity. That feeling that there is never enough, or never will be enough. I\u2019ve worked myself into exhaustion countless times chasing money. And much of it has been driven by a feeling of not good enough. If I could only make enough money then I could feel safe and secure. Then the people in my life could be happy, knowing their needs were going to be met.<\/p><p id=\"34ab\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph me mf fv mg b mh mi mj mk ml mm mn mo mp mq mr ms mt mu mv mw mx my mz na nb fo bj\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">It\u2019s this mindset that has driven me to work very hard. But the underlying belief that I am inadequate, and unworthy of success, has kept me in desperation and scarcity, spinning my wheels in hard work without the desired results.<\/p><p id=\"34ab\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph me mf fv mg b mh mi mj mk ml mm mn mo mp mq mr ms mt mu mv mw mx my mz na nb fo bj\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">\u00a0<\/p><h2 id=\"b641\" class=\"nd ne fv be nf ng nh ni nj nk nl nm nn mp no np nq mt nr ns nt mx nu nv nw nx bj\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Movie Making and House Flipping<\/h2><p id=\"b339\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph me mf fv mg b mh ny mj mk ml nz mn mo mp oa mr ms mt ob mv mw mx oc mz na nb fo bj\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">I didn\u2019t want this blog to turn into another one of those experiences for me. Like the movie I wrote and produced in 2012. Or the house I flipped in 2022.<\/p><p id=\"c667\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph me mf fv mg b mh mi mj mk ml mm mn mo mp mq mr ms mt mu mv mw mx my mz na nb fo bj\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Both of those experiences were brutally painful for me. Neither worked out the way I wanted them to.<\/p><p id=\"1dcb\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph me mf fv mg b mh mi mj mk ml mm mn mo mp mq mr ms mt mu mv mw mx my mz na nb fo bj\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">I remember working on that house. It was in the height of the real estate bubble. I did most of the work myself. I\u2019m not a builder by any means, but I knew I could figure out most of it.<\/p><p id=\"8514\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph me mf fv mg b mh mi mj mk ml mm mn mo mp mq mr ms mt mu mv mw mx my mz na nb fo bj\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">And I did.<\/p><p id=\"7bc7\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph me mf fv mg b mh mi mj mk ml mm mn mo mp mq mr ms mt mu mv mw mx my mz na nb fo bj\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">I replaced flooring. I tiled in a shower. I replaced kitchen cabinets and countertops. It was a great learning experience. Exhausting, but very educational.<\/p><p id=\"476b\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph me mf fv mg b mh mi mj mk ml mm mn mo mp mq mr ms mt mu mv mw mx my mz na nb fo bj\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">But it took a long time.<\/p><p id=\"10e9\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph me mf fv mg b mh mi mj mk ml mm mn mo mp mq mr ms mt mu mv mw mx my mz na nb fo bj\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">About 5 months.<\/p><p id=\"fb4b\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph me mf fv mg b mh mi mj mk ml mm mn mo mp mq mr ms mt mu mv mw mx my mz na nb fo bj\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">I was watching the market the whole time. Watching things fly off the real estate shelves at breakneck speed. But instead of feeling confident that I was going to be able to participate in the hot market, I remember getting worried many times throughout the process that somehow, some way, things were going to collapse and I was going to be left with a house I couldn\u2019t afford.<\/p><p id=\"1e56\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph me mf fv mg b mh mi mj mk ml mm mn mo mp mq mr ms mt mu mv mw mx my mz na nb fo bj\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">And that\u2019s kind of what happened.<\/p><p id=\"b7ea\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph me mf fv mg b mh mi mj mk ml mm mn mo mp mq mr ms mt mu mv mw mx my mz na nb fo bj\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">I finished the house in August, right after the market started cooling. I wouldn\u2019t say the bubble had burst at that point, but it had cooled enough that people started getting hesitant.<\/p><p id=\"b207\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph me mf fv mg b mh mi mj mk ml mm mn mo mp mq mr ms mt mu mv mw mx my mz na nb fo bj\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">So I wasn\u2019t able to sell it.<\/p><p id=\"1cc2\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph me mf fv mg b mh mi mj mk ml mm mn mo mp mq mr ms mt mu mv mw mx my mz na nb fo bj\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">If I had finished that house a month earlier \u2014 even just a few weeks earlier \u2014 it would have sold in a week for over asking. I\u2019m sure of it. That\u2019s what everything else around there was doing at the time.<\/p><p id=\"5d0c\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph me mf fv mg b mh mi mj mk ml mm mn mo mp mq mr ms mt mu mv mw mx my mz na nb fo bj\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">But somehow, some way, I found myself failing to accomplish my goal and being left with a house I couldn\u2019t really afford.<\/p><p id=\"68af\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph me mf fv mg b mh mi mj mk ml mm mn mo mp mq mr ms mt mu mv mw mx my mz na nb fo bj\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">(It worked out okay as I just decided to rent it, but still)<\/p><p id=\"35c7\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph me mf fv mg b mh mi mj mk ml mm mn mo mp mq mr ms mt mu mv mw mx my mz na nb fo bj\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">My broken money mindset had once again shown itself to be effective at bringing me to the same place I had always been with money: poor.<\/p><p id=\"35c7\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph me mf fv mg b mh mi mj mk ml mm mn mo mp mq mr ms mt mu mv mw mx my mz na nb fo bj\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">\u00a0<\/p><h2 id=\"c2ea\" class=\"nd ne fv be nf ng nh ni nj nk nl nm nn mp no np nq mt nr ns nt mx nu nv nw nx bj\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">How to Make Money\u2026Probably<\/h2><p id=\"74fd\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph me mf fv mg b mh ny mj mk ml nz mn mo mp oa mr ms mt ob mv mw mx oc mz na nb fo bj\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">I didn\u2019t really mean for this post to turn into a post about money. Truly. And I\u2019m not now going to make some bold proclamation about how I know the secret to make you a millionaire if you just buy my course. (Although keep reading and watch me shift my perspective in real time)<\/p><p id=\"2216\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph me mf fv mg b mh mi mj mk ml mm mn mo mp mq mr ms mt mu mv mw mx my mz na nb fo bj\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">This blog is about vulnerability and connection and honesty. So I guess I just wanted to talk a little bit about what my relationship with money has been like and why I have found myself struggling financially and where I know I need to improve.<\/p><p id=\"5539\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph me mf fv mg b mh mi mj mk ml mm mn mo mp mq mr ms mt mu mv mw mx my mz na nb fo bj\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">I just wanted to get these things off my chest and work through them a little bit. That\u2019s what writing helps me do. And hopefully it will be of some use to someone.<\/p><p id=\"1835\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph me mf fv mg b mh mi mj mk ml mm mn mo mp mq mr ms mt mu mv mw mx my mz na nb fo bj\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Garrett always says that wealth is a byproduct of value creation. I really like this perspective. Oftentimes in our society we look at money as an evil thing. We see the rich and the poor and we think it\u2019s unfair that some people have a lot while the majority suffer in poverty. And we might then blame the rich for being selfish.<\/p><p id=\"4fdd\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph me mf fv mg b mh mi mj mk ml mm mn mo mp mq mr ms mt mu mv mw mx my mz na nb fo bj\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">And some of them are.<\/p><p id=\"9102\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph me mf fv mg b mh mi mj mk ml mm mn mo mp mq mr ms mt mu mv mw mx my mz na nb fo bj\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">But a lot of them are just people who understand how money works.<\/p><p id=\"fb49\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph me mf fv mg b mh mi mj mk ml mm mn mo mp mq mr ms mt mu mv mw mx my mz na nb fo bj\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">They understand that money comes to those who create value for the world. Who solve problems and serve people.<\/p><p id=\"9e03\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph me mf fv mg b mh mi mj mk ml mm mn mo mp mq mr ms mt mu mv mw mx my mz na nb fo bj\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">That\u2019s what true capitalism is all about. Not the crony capitalism we see so often these days where people place profits over people and large corporations wield great power over governments.<\/p><p id=\"e4dc\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph me mf fv mg b mh mi mj mk ml mm mn mo mp mq mr ms mt mu mv mw mx my mz na nb fo bj\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Because of these bad actors, and some of the ideas we hear about money growing up, we might also feel that money is slimy, like those who try to sell things are somehow selfish, immoral people. It may conjure up images of used car salesmen who only care about making money and are willing to say or do anything to get the deal.<\/p><p id=\"736b\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph me mf fv mg b mh mi mj mk ml mm mn mo mp mq mr ms mt mu mv mw mx my mz na nb fo bj\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">\u201cOf course, they\u2019re just trying to sell me something.\u201d We might roll our eyes and condemn the YouTuber who offers a course or the blogger who asks for an email address in exchange for a free pdf download (mine is\u00a0<a class=\"af md\" href=\"https:\/\/arealhumanbeing.co\/you-are-enough-freebie\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener ugc nofollow\">here<\/a>, btw).<\/p><p id=\"4a18\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph me mf fv mg b mh mi mj mk ml mm mn mo mp mq mr ms mt mu mv mw mx my mz na nb fo bj\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">But why do we do this? Do we condemn the waiter at the restaurant we eat at, or the bank teller at our bank, or the plumber who comes to fix our leaky drain pipe? They\u2019re trying to make money, too.<\/p><p id=\"689e\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph me mf fv mg b mh mi mj mk ml mm mn mo mp mq mr ms mt mu mv mw mx my mz na nb fo bj\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Perhaps we do. Perhaps some of us might complain that they charge too much money, or that they don\u2019t do a good enough job for what we\u2019re paying.<\/p><p id=\"c628\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph me mf fv mg b mh mi mj mk ml mm mn mo mp mq mr ms mt mu mv mw mx my mz na nb fo bj\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">But here\u2019s the thing. Something else that Garrett says is that our expenses are someone else\u2019s income.<\/p><p id=\"84cb\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph me mf fv mg b mh mi mj mk ml mm mn mo mp mq mr ms mt mu mv mw mx my mz na nb fo bj\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Most people are trying to make a living so that they can have a comfortable, secure life, and so that they can provide the same for the people they love. Most people are not evil tycoons who sit in their ivory towers twirling their mustaches while they steal money from the poor and swim in giant piles of gold.<\/p><p id=\"bb4d\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph me mf fv mg b mh mi mj mk ml mm mn mo mp mq mr ms mt mu mv mw mx my mz na nb fo bj\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Most people who are trying to make money are just like you. They aren\u2019t evil.<\/p><p id=\"bb4d\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph me mf fv mg b mh mi mj mk ml mm mn mo mp mq mr ms mt mu mv mw mx my mz na nb fo bj\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">\u00a0<\/p><h2 id=\"d65c\" class=\"nd ne fv be nf ng nh ni nj nk nl nm nn mp no np nq mt nr ns nt mx nu nv nw nx bj\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Money Isn\u2019t Evil<\/h2><p id=\"862c\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph me mf fv mg b mh ny mj mk ml nz mn mo mp oa mr ms mt ob mv mw mx oc mz na nb fo bj\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">There is a scripture that people often misquote. They say that money is the root of all evil. It is a tool. It can be used for good and for bad. Most people use it for good. To support themselves and their family. Many donate to good causes. We all spend money and that money goes to someone else\u2019s salary so that they can support themselves and their family.<\/p><p id=\"6c59\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph me mf fv mg b mh mi mj mk ml mm mn mo mp mq mr ms mt mu mv mw mx my mz na nb fo bj\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">So we shouldn\u2019t need to feel ashamed when we try to make money.<\/p><p id=\"21b4\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph me mf fv mg b mh mi mj mk ml mm mn mo mp mq mr ms mt mu mv mw mx my mz na nb fo bj\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">I think that is one of the things I\u2019m still trying to work through. Why should I feel guilty or embarrassed about trying earn an income through blogging? It\u2019s completely normal and perfectly fine.<\/p><p id=\"174d\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph me mf fv mg b mh mi mj mk ml mm mn mo mp mq mr ms mt mu mv mw mx my mz na nb fo bj\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">I guess it\u2019s more about the\u00a0<em class=\"nc\">way<\/em>\u00a0people do it that matters to me.<\/p><p id=\"107a\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph me mf fv mg b mh mi mj mk ml mm mn mo mp mq mr ms mt mu mv mw mx my mz na nb fo bj\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">I want to be authentic. I don\u2019t want money to dictate very much of what I write or how I write it. I want the art and the expression, and the connection, to be the main driver. I want to help people.\u00a0<em class=\"nc\">And<\/em>\u00a0I want to make a living from my writing.
